On the Isle of Anglesey, Beaumaris is a well-known historic town that boasts one of the most breathtaking sunrise views thanks to its location on the Menai Strait. It is a major yachting centre and is also known for its historic buildings, including a castle from the time of Edward I that is now a World Heritage site, as well as a pier, gaol, and courthouse that were built in the Victorian era. The street layout of mediaeval Beaumaris has been preserved in large part. The town's atmosphere, architectural variety, time periods, scale, open areas, roof types, and overall quality all play significant roles in shaping its unique personality. In addition to a golf course and a wide variety of restaurants, shops, and bars, the city also offers a chance to go fishing and take boat tours. Along the coast, there is a large bay known as Red Wharf Bay, also known as Traeth Coch (Red Beach) in Welsh. At low tide, nearly 25 square kilometres (10 square miles) of sand are exposed in the bay, making it ideal for safe swimming, great for families, and fantastic for fishing and long, scenic strolls. A bit further away is the port of Holyhead, which offers frequent ferry service to Dublin. Beaumaris, on the south coast of the picturesque Isle of Anglesey, is a great central base from which to explore Wales, and the spectacular Snowdonia Mountains are within easy reach.
