West Yorkshire's Wakefield is a cathedral city. Resting on the River Calder and the Pennines, it's a lovely base from which to explore the area. The city boasts rich history surrounding The Battle of Wakefield during the Wars of the Roses, as well as being a Royalist stronghold in the Civil War and an important trading centre, with plenty of attractions to explore that perfectly sum up such events, including the Wakefield Museum & Library, the National Coal Mining Museum for England, and more. Wakefield offers more than just a history-rich day out; it also has a great selection of restaurants, cafés, and pubs and a vibrant nightlife with plenty of bars. There are also a variety of shops, from independent to high street names, excellent for a day of shopping. The city also has The Hepworth art museum, named after Barbara Hepworth who was born there, the Theatre Royal, created by architect Frank Matcham, where you can enjoy musicals, theatre, live music, stand-up comedy, and dance, as well as Sandal Castle and the city's majestic cathedral. Visit Nostell, a National Trust Palladian villa with a beautiful park and gardens, or Pontefract Castle, with so much history in the region. Leeds offers a bustling environment at any time of day, with stunning architecture, a wealth of museums and galleries, shopping, and cafes. Bradford, Halifax, Sheffield, Doncaster, and more are easily accessible for day trips, and the Peak District National Park can be reached by a picturesque drive.
