Modern traffic has long since replaced coaches and horse pulled carts on its small lanes, but Tuesday market day in Hawes remains as bustling as ever, with a farmers' auction bringing sheep farmers from all over northern England. Traditional stores, cafes, and inns today serve a range of Dales visitors as well as the local people. The award-winning Wensleydale Creamery, made famous by the animated Wallace and Grommit films, is now available to the public so that visitors can see the famous cheese being made and enjoy the finished product in a friendly café. In the former station yard are the bustling National Park Centre and the Dales Countryside Museum. Marie Hartley and Joan Ingilby, two eminent Dales historians and authors, amassed a beautiful collection of artefacts from the Dales for display in the museum.
