The Sustonica certification focuses on four key areas: energy conservation, water conservation,
waste reduction and promoting inclusiveness. They are on a mission to become the most widely
recognised sustainability standard for holiday rentals and a catalyst to reduce emissions of holiday
lets and influence guests to reduce their own household consumption too.
Properties that display the Sustonica badge have successfully passed the criteria,
which align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council standards,
and their owner has made a commitment to look after our planet as well as you.

First of all the owners Bill and Heather were there to greet us, as well as inform us about the village and the surrounding district. Bill then gave us some hints on places to visit, some of which we took his advice and were not disappointed.
The school house is the most comfortable place we have stayed at with all you need at hand ,including a very well laid out garden which we were able to spend many hours sitting in and enjoying the views, which were many.
The village of Lustleigh has a Pub/restaurant a post office grocers shop as well as beautiful tea room that serves the best cream tea. This village is one of the most picturesque we have walked around with its Thatched cottages and locals only to willing to stop and chat with you, we even managed to see a cricket match whilst we were there.
The location of Lustleigh meant it was easy to visit Dartmoor of which a trip to Haytor was an excellent walk with a stunning view at the top. Also you are not far from places like Brixham, Colleton Fishacres and Castle Drogo. Another bonus was being able to go to Widdecombe Fair in the beautiful village of Widdecombe, and we did see Uncle Tom Cobley!
But most of all the school house accommodation has given us a welcome two week break that refreshed and revitalised both my wife and I, and we needed it.
Well done to Bill and Heather for creating this exceptional Home.

"A beautifully converted school room, retaining all the character of the original, yet modern, well equipped with decent quality implements, and very comfortable."
The owners made us very welcome, and even provided a bottle of wine to greet us (as well as tea, milk and biscuits)
The village itself is very picturesque, with lots of "chocolate box" thatch cottages. The pub, village shop and parish church are each good and welcoming in their own way, and made the village complete. The surrounding countryside is beautiful. But visitors should be aware that the local roads are very narrow and difficult for those not used to this - it was also fortunate that this schoolroom/cottage has its own parking, as it is at a premium in the village itself.

"This is an exceptional holiday rental."
The apartment in the Old Schoolhouse is very comfortable and lovingly decorated, maintained, and kitted out by the owners who live in the main house on the property. Bill and Heather are also exceptional hosts—they give incredibly helpful advice on how to best enjoy everything that this exquisitely beautiful area has to offer. The rental also includes use of their lovely garden that overlooks the village and the surrounding countryside. This was my third stay here, and every stay is truly memorable.

"We had a wonderful stay at the Old School House."
The house is very comfortable and well equiped. The area is gorgeous. Close to Dartmoor national park, but the village itself offers great walks as well. And only a 2 minute walk from the pub for meals and beer.
The owners are fantastic, very welcoming and great knowledge of the surrounding area.

"We absolutely loved staying at the Old School House in Lustleigh."
House was a home away from home and super comfortable. Plenty to do in the area all within 45 mins of the village and the garden is beautiful for chilling out for the day. Very dog friendly as well as the garden is enclosed and everyone always shuts the gate. Lustleigh is a lovely friendly village with everything you might need within less than a 5 min walk from the school house. Bill and Heather made us feel so welcome. If we were the type of family to go back to a holiday home we would absolutely - but there are too many places to see in the UK so are unlikely to revisit but you never know!!.

All we needed was there. Bill and Heather are the best! Always available for tips to do and visit things in the neighbourhood. Lustleigh is a very beautiful little village with a good pub and a lovely and vriendlief village shop. Unfortunately the tearoom was closed during our stay, it looked also nice.

The perfect holiday cottage in a really lovely friendly village which has a good pub and well-stocked village shop. There is also a good tearoom open Thursday-Sunday. Heather and Bill are the delightful and helpful owners of the Schoolhouse - there if you need them. I would thoroughly recommend the property..

"Very well equiped and stylish cottage with an interesting history."
Pictures and a few items from the old school are in the cottage. Best equiped kitchen we have even seen in a rental property. Lovely touches throughout the cottage - which was in most ways more like a 5 star cottage. Stunning village with lovely pub, tea room (both very well worth a visit), well stocked village store and art shop. Great base to explore the area - so much to do! You could stay a month and just scratch the surface! Hosts were friendly and helpful, without being intrusive. Would hightly recommend the old school house and Lustleigh.

"Lovely property in equally lovely village."
This was a repeat visit and we were not disappointed, and this time we made good use of the garden. As on the previous occasion it is spotlessly clean and well appointed. It was nice to see that the owners had invested in the property and have greatly improved the interior, so Sykes should really be presenting some updated photographs to do it justice. I don't want to praise it anymore in case we can't get another booking!

"The cottage was perfect, a home from home."
Everything we needed was there and was spotlessly clean. The position high over a chocolate box village was superb. A reasonable pub, and a lovely tearoom, and lovely walks from the door. Dartmoor is within easy reach, with some more fantastic walks. A disused railway is now an excellent cycle path. Our hosts were lovely, and extremely helpful. We will definitely return.

"This was our sixth visit to this lovely cottage and won't be our last, which should say it all!"
We love it and Lustleigh which is great for its proximity to lovely walks and the coast.There are two good eateries - a pub and an exceptionally good tearoom, and a well stocked village shop. Further shops can be found in nearby Bovey Tracey and Moretonhampstead. The cottage itself is in perfect situation in the centre of the village and furnished to a high standard, and Bill and Heather are always on hand to give friendly help and advice, without being intrusive.

"Absolutely gorgeous holiday cottage set in a beautiful village."
Plenty of places to go walking. The dog friendly pub serves delicious food by friendly staff. The best of all worlds at this holiday, perfect for chilling but if you like to be a bit more active there’s plenty to see and do too. Owners Bill and Heather very pleasant and would always go the extra mile . We would love to return .

Lustleigh is a charming village with a population which is obviously proud of it and very active in maintaining it as a viable community. Bill & Heather are equally obviously active members of the community and full of local knowledge and useful information. On our self-catering holidays, we have always made a point of trying somewhere different every time but would certainly consider returning to the Old School House, if looking for similar accommodation in this area again.
This was our fourth booking with Helpful Holidays and all of them have been more than just satisfactory. I was a little concerned at their merger with Sykes but then remembered that we have also used Sykes on other occasions and always been more than satisfied with our decision.
The one feature of the website which really annoys me is the little pop-ups advising that someone has just booked a cottage somewhere. If they haven't, you've got a serious problem. Speaking as an ex sales professional and retired member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, I would suggest that they add absolutely nothing to the booking experience but are just an aggravating distraction!

"The flat in the Old Schoolhouse is well appointed and charming."
And it is well situated with a lovely garden and gorgeous views over the beautiful village of Lustleigh and the stunning surrounding countryside. The hosts, Heather and Bill Fothergill, are truly outstanding. They are friendly, helpful with all kinds of information that contributes to a wonderful stay, and exceptionally thoughtful and hospitable. This is the second year that I have stayed in the Old Schoolhouse, and I hope to return again next year.

The property was very clean and was well eqipped with a plentiful supply of basic items, the inclusion of fresh flowers and fruit was very welcome and the biscuits were delicious! The Cleve served excellent food and can be recommended. The location can't be faulted and we wouldn't hesitate to visit again.

The property
Located in the centre of the pretty Devon village of Lustleigh, on the edge of the stunning Dartmoor National Park, this cottage has been beautifully converted from the Victorian school.
The village tea room, shop and friendly pub are just 150 yards from the cottage, so you are in the perfect spot for a Devonshire cream tea or hearty supper, perhaps after walking the footpaths which radiate from the village and take in spectacular countryside scenery.
This semi-detached cottage welcomes you into a cosy living room with wood burner effect electric fire and entertainment in the form of a Smart TV and piano for duets or to practice your scales.
The kitchen/dining room, through an archway from the living room, is a light, airy room for rustling up delicious meals from the fresh local Devon produce.
Downstairs is a handy shower-room, shared by the two bedrooms which you will find upstairs, complete with period characterful beams with wrought iron supports.
You will enjoy observing the slow pace of village life and lovely views from the pretty lawn garden which surrounds the cottage, with no less than two patios for eating al fresco from the barbecue and toasting your toes around the firepit when the sun sets.
As well as dramatic Lustleigh Cleave on the edge of the village to explore, Dartmoor's eastern slopes are just beyond, a great place for walking, picnicking and admiring the landscape.
Riding, fishing and golf can all be found close to Lustleigh, with the sea and beaches at Teignmouth or Torbay only about 10 miles away, so there are plenty of activities to sample.
