In 1262, a Cumbrian market town was awarded a charter to operate a weekly market and an open-air car-boot sale in the covered market hall. Shops, taverns, and restaurants line the streets of Wigton, which also features a theatre, bowls, swimming, tennis, and a variety of other activities. 'A Time to Dance' by Lord Melvyn Bragg was set in Wigton and the surrounding area, where he grew up, and where he wrote several of his works.
