Located just 11 miles south of Durham, Bishop Auckland is a bustling market town with a 900-year-old mediaeval deer park and hunting lodge that was once home to the Prince Bishops of England. Bishop Auckland has a thriving arts and culture scene, with a cinema, theatre, and arts complex. A wide variety of dining and shopping options can be found in the town's commercial district. Binchester, the county's largest Roman fort, is just outside the city limits, and visitors can explore its mysteries, as well as the history of England as seen through the eyes of Arthur, a 10-year-old boy from the North East, in Kynren, a spectacular night show opening in July 2016 that features pyrotechnics, stunning lighting, and water effects. Bishop Auckland to Stanhope has a scenic railway line. Jonathan Ruffer, the man behind the Auckland Project and the driving force behind Kynren's arrival in Bishop Auckland, recently purchased the property. Just a short drive north will take you to Durham's many shops, pubs and restaurants, as well as Chester-le-Roman Street's town and Beamish Museum. More than a few hours' drive away you'll find Durham Dales, Newcastle upon Tyne, Hadrian's Wall, Cragside at Rothbury, and the North York Moors.
