Middleton Grange, the town's retail mall, is the third largest in the region and features a typical market hall in addition to a multiplex movie theatre and a health and fitness centre with a swimming pool. In addition to the Heugh Battery Museum, other sights in the area include Nelson's final war vessel, the HMS Tricomalee. Just down the coast two miles is the beautiful Seaton Carew beach, along with an equally challenging golf course, and the wildlife-rich Saltholme RSPB Reserve, where seals and wading birds are frequently observed. The spectacular Teesside White Water Centre will draw the adventuresome, while the Tees riverbank walk will appeal to those who prefer a more tranquil outing. The open-air museum Beamish is conveniently located near Durham, making it a great day trip option.
