The beach is known for surfing and kiteboarding, and there is a designated dog area. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer season. The Tarka Trail goes through Bideford and is particularly popular with cyclists, with cycle hire, including child buggies and even dog buggies, available here and elsewhere along the route. The Royal North Devon Golf Club is also located in Northam Burrows, which is part of North Devon's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
