Alston, the highest market town in England, is located in the North Pennines in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is surrounded by a distinctive scenery of moorland, hills, rivers, and waterfalls. Take a ride on one of the meticulously restored steam or diesel trains on the South Tynedale Railway, which runs from Alston to Slaggyford, through the breathtaking beauty of the South Tyne valley. Additionally regarded as one of England's best salmon rivers, the River Tyne offers local day-ticket fishing. The Killhope Lead Mining Museum offers a terrific family day out with interactive exhibitions. The North Pennines used to be one of the richest lead mining centres in Europe. This makes a fantastic base because northern Cumbria, County Durham, and Northumberland are all easily accessible, and the A686 is one of the world's top drives according to the AA.
