It was founded 1100 years ago by King Alfred who built a fortified settlement here ad went on to build the Abbey which draws tourists throughout the year. Gold Hill is one of the most famous locations in Shaftesbury and in one of the cottages that sits on its top, you'll find the Town Museum which holds samples of the buttons which once made Shaftesbury so famous. About 5 miles north-east of Shaftesbury are the remains of Wardour Castle, which has never been restored since it was besieged during the English Civil War. Half an hour away are the fossilised beaches of Lyme Regis and Charmouth.
